sugar overload!

I got a sugar overload over Easter! Cassie & Allie made a “peeps cake” that we enjoyed WAY too much!!! It was a 2 layer white chocolate cake with fudge icing, raspberry filling, and peeps around the top edge with chololate morsels in the middle. It looks like a sunflower from the top! The peeps cake, peach pie, and CANDY made it a SWEET weekend!

Blowin’ Out The Eternal Flame

So I’m not happy when people don’t think about
what they’re doing. That seems to be what
happened in Bullhead City, Arizona. They built
an eternal flame at a veteran’s memorial. It was
lit on Veteran’s Day in November. Then the gas
bill came and they decided to turn if off!

Wouldn’t you have figured that the gas bill was
going to be huge!!! Especially when you’re using
a large burner! Use your head people! And why
just turn it off? At least now they’ve turned it
back on. And they’re going to continue to mess
with this because Bullhead City is going to purchase
a smaller burner to use regularly and use the
larger burner with the “impressive flame” only for
special events like Veteran’s Day, 4th of July, etc.

This is a reminder to all of us to think ahead of time
so we don’t do something stupid like turning off
an eternal flame! What a dishonor to the veterans
they were supposed to be honoring.

Mellencamp Concert

John can still ROCK it! He sounded great at the Crump Theater last night. I always judge artists very harshly when I see them in concert. Mellencamp is a true musician because he sounds the same live as he does on studio recordings. I might not always agree with what he speaks out about… but I like his music!

Wow! The kids are back in school…

All of a sudden summer was over! Allie is back in pre-school. Just one more year before kindergarten and she is very excited to go to “real” school. One very nice thing about having your own pool is you can keep it open as long as you like. So even though school is back in session, which means Donner Aquatics Center and most other outdoor pools are closed, we are still enjoying ours. We won’t close it until it gets too cold to swim! Even though fall means no more pool (eventually) it’s still our favorite season!

Avoiding Mosquitoes

Officials say there are four times the normal number of mosquitoes this year. So to make sure they don’t come around, here are some tips to avoid them:

* Mosquitoes are attracted to things that remind them of nectar. Wear light clothing and cover most of your body. Avoid bright, floral colors, but khaki, beige, and olive are good colors to wear.

* Mosquitoes are attracted by some body odors. Avoid fragrances in soaps, shampoos, and lotions.

* Citronella candles may be useful to keep mosquitoes away.

* Don’t apply insect repellent under clothes. Your body may absorb more of the toxic substances than is advisable.

* If you have kids, use pediatric insect repellent. They contain only 6 to 10 % DEET.

* Remove any standing water from your yard. Dispose of old tires, buckets, or any other container that may allow stagnant water.

Good luck at avoiding the little buggers!

Wedding Season

Wedding season is in full swing! My wife Cassie and I own Maddox Entertainment (www.maddoxentertainment.com) and we DJ a LOT of weddings. It’s a good thing our daughter Allie loves seeing the babysitters just about every Saturday night, and sometimes Friday nights and Sunday afternoons too! By the way, if you’re planning a wedding in June, September or October ‘09 in this area you had better pick your vendors now! Those seem to be the busiest wedding months. If you’d like to find professional local vendors, planning tips & advice, and design ideas, check out Columbus Area Wedding Professionals at www.columbusareaweddings.com. We have a lot of fun DJ’ing weddings and other parties! You can’t beat that!

Backyard Time!

All of us in the Maddox household are really happy that spring is here! We had our first official cookout party yesterday. We kept the menu simple… burgers, dogs, veggie tray, chips… but it sure did taste good. Aside from a little rain after the sun went down it was great to hang out in the yard. Hope you’re enjoying the outdoors too!
